The renowned art fair Art On Paper Amsterdam will take place from February 12 to 15, 2026 at De Kromhouthal (Gedempt Hamerkanaal 231, 1021 KP Amsterdam).
Among others, Galerie Martin Mertens will present works by Berlin artist Peer Kriesel, whose fascinating hidden object pictures and “overpaintings” will captivate visitors.
My hidden object pictures are characterized by a multitude of detailed figures and grotesque faces that populate the canvas in a seemingly chaotic yet well-thought-out composition. Inspired by surrealism, my works critically examine the digital transformation of our society. I am particularly interested in how identity and values change in the age of digitalization.
In addition to reflecting on social media and information overload, my work also addresses the topic of artificial intelligence. My figures can be understood as a metaphor for the increasing fusion of human and machine intelligence. In an era where AI-generated content and deepfakes are becoming ubiquitous, I explore the blurring boundaries between reality and digital manipulation.
A highlight of the exhibition will be a brand new overpainted nautical chart, “No Silicon”, part of my “Overpaintings” series, which has existed since 2012. In this large-format work, I combine the analog past with my characteristic, surreal drawings. The dissolving boundaries symbolize the challenges of orientation in our data-driven world.
My art invites reflection on our increasingly digitized and AI-influenced society, without neglecting the aesthetic aspect. I strive to capture the complexity and fascination of the digital era while stimulating critical reflections and bringing structure or order to the complex construct through geometric shapes and lines.
