These impressive prints on high-quality Hahnemühle paper capture the essence of Kriesel’s visionary hidden object drawings, which originally originated in a sketchbook from 2025. Inspired by the idea of creating a world of motifs for a tarot card deck, Kriesel draws on the rich tradition of the Surrealists, who were also fascinated by the tarot.
Like André Breton and Max Ernst, who created the “Jeu de Marseille” together with other Surrealists in the 1940s, Kriesel also draws on the rich visual language of the tarot. However, while the Surrealists replaced traditional card symbols with poetic and revolutionary figures, Kriesel translates these archetypal images into the visual language of the 21st century. His detailed drawings combine contemporary motifs with Kriesel’s characteristic style, creating a fascinating bridge between the iconographic tradition of the tarot and our modern, digital world. In doing so, Kriesel is less concerned with esoteric interpretations and more with the artistic exploration of cultural symbols and their transformation in our digital age.
